An apparently simple element such as water can have an extraordinary journey. From one of the most unique places on Earth, a unique ecosystem combines the elements in such a special way that the outcome of that combination is truly amazing. This is what the Romans, especially Roman women, found out many centuries ago, when they discovered a place now known as Mondariz.

Located northwest of Spain in the region of Pontevedra (Galicia), and since the mid-nineteenth century, Mondariz has become one of the most prestigious spa locations in Europe. Nestled in beautiful scenery and visited by people across the globe, Mondariz is truly a magical place. But why is Mondariz so different from other water-oriented resorts? What moves so many visitors from all over Europe to make a pilgrimage to Mondariz year after year?

The Spa of Mondariz is strategically located at the bottom of the Tea Valley, right beside the Tea River. Its unique location produce a special thermal water that takes decades to make its way from deep underground to eventually the spa itself and Mondariz products.

A Location Made for a Princess

Historical documents depict the use of Mondariz thermal water for spa use since the mid-nineteenth century, yet it is quite possible that its therapeutic properties were well known many years before that. There is some controversy about the location of the original Roman village called Búrbida, which historians situate somewhere near the Tea River where thermal water bubbles first were discovered.

It is possible that a Roman military road coming from what nowadays is the city of Tuy went along this very area. It is also probable that this thermal water was known for its properties by the inhabitants of the El Sobroso castle (1.9 miles away the actual Mondariz Spa) since some historians say there were some facilities in the area meant for extracting water.

Other authors assure the wedding between Dionisio I of Portugal and Princess Isabel de Aragón (later known as Saint Elizabeth of Portugal) took place in 1282 right where the Spa of Mondariz is located. Probably that area was chosen to allow the princess, who had a very weak health, soothe some of her ailments by drinking the water and bathing in the Tea River.

The ancient Romans and other historians are in agreement that the Mondariz ecosystem worked as a natural laboratory producing one of the purest and richest waters in the whole planet.

One of Earth’s Natural Labs

Galicia has a high yearly rain ratio. That´s mostly why its landscapes are probably the most exuberant and green in all of Spain. Rain water is rapidly absorbed by Mondariz hills permeable soil. Little water evaporates and most of it gets absorbed into the subsoil, where the legend of the Mondariz “natural laboratory” begins.  Drained water accumulates to create underground streams and gravity does the rest. Water from these streams flow slowly down the inside of the hills through natural caves and gets charged with a variety of trace elements and minerals along its way. The process ends when water has made its entire way down the hills and emerges in the shape of the Tea River. The entire water’s journey can take from 70 to 80 years after its initial rain at the top of the hills.
